Chatting with a friend who is haunted by an unshakable weight problem, I was struck my something. She said, as she has many times before, that she needed to "lose weight", and this time it occurred to me that there's bad psychology in that phrase. After all, when we "lose" something, it's generally something we'd like to get back!

"Shed some weight" might leave fewer landmines in our psyches!

With so much quackery in the world, “healthy” is very difficult to define.

"Shed" might just be too British for Americans, who after all speak a different language.

Calling it "weight" may be a big part of the problem. Water is weight, and that is usually all that we end up losing with our workouts and meal restrictions. Muscle is weight, and we certainly don't want to lose that. Ditto with bones. Yet calling it "fat loss" is a bit on the nose, for those who don't like being called fat.

I don't like the term "lose weight". I gained 10 lbs. when I added distance running to my workouts. I just say "get in better shape".

The longest I have ever been on a diet is about two hours - and I think I even
cheated in that amount of time. Language, labels, and frame of mind play such
critical roles. Ultimately, you have to find what works for you.

For me, it was learning that eating one meal a day would make you gain weight.
Your body is a factory, not a warehouse - you need to keep energy moving in
and out. Once I started doing three meals a day, I connected with a routine
that kept my weight down.

Just walking around work gave me some movement, and I immediately gained
weight when the pandemic started. Walking around the neighborhood and
some hikes have helped keep me moving.

The body is a factory AND a warehouse. It takes in energy to keep running, and, ideally, puts a little aside for emergencies.

But cut back on the intake and thousands of years of evolution will kick in. “Argh! It’s another ice age!” The body shifts into heavy storage mode.

This is especially true for “big eaters” who try to cut down.

I love a big meal, so I started to get into the habit of having a salad for lunch -
it is satisfying without packing on the pounds. I would get the pre-made
salads from the supermarket and it was a good meal solution.

One meal a day is a "big" meal, meaning whatever I want. I try to make the
other two meals light or on the healthy side.

I'm trying to watch my waistline. Luckily it sticks out where I can see it!

A nutritionist once told me that we never
truly lose weight our metabolism remembers
that weight and works to get back to that
weight.Ideally it is important not to gain
more weight and maintain that weight you
already have.Having a proper diet and exercise
are important but don't become obsessed with
pounds you might never shed.
