A lot of "foes not known for fighting each other" has turned into canon, somewhat. For example; At the time of its printing, Daredevil fought the Kingpin - a KNOWN Spider-Man foe! I'm sure there were more than a few slide-slips like that.
In Mr. Byrne's second Fantastic Four issue, the Human Torch battled Hammerhead.
In the FF following the return from the Secret Wars, Reed Richards battled Dr. Octopus. And we damned near got to see Doc Ock against the Hulk, and I'd have paid good money to read THAT one!
I think it was FF #250 when we almost got treated to Captain America vs Gladiator. Another that would have been worth a few bucks!
Tangentially, I guess Chris Claremont couldn't wait to pit Dr. Doom against the X-Men, despite his having no real reason to take on the mutants. (Then again, it's comics...)
Superman vs the Joker - I don't remember seeing it before Mr. Byrne's Superman story. That must have been quite a challenge how to keep that issue more than one panel. Joker: "Well, well, if it isn't good old Superpoop! I think I'll-" Superman: "Ah-CHOOO!" Inspector Turpin: "Thanks for the hand, Supes. So what's up with you next? Wanna get lunch?"
Captain America faced an old/new combo of Batroc Ze Lepair with Mr. Hyde. That was great fun!
Times like this, I miss our old buddy Robbie Perry. He'd have eaten this up with mustard for lunch.
