The Avengers vs The Sentinels in Avengers #102-104 was an incredible story that sucked seven year old me into a lifetime of comics.  It took years to find out they were actually X-Men villains.

On the flip side, I've long hoped for the X-Men to take on Ultron.

Interesting, Peter! I had to have read those AVENGERS issues, but have no memory of the story. Thanks for another excuse to revisit ESSENTIAL volumes!

That could be a good one, Phillip! Which team of X-Men did you have in mind?

Oh, and I appreciate those of you who actually read my first post and are "playing fair" by following directions.

I thought X-Men versus Dracula was pretty left field. But of course at the time I hadn't been exposed to too many comics yet.

I enjoyed Spider-Man fighting Doctor Doom in the animated Spider-man shows.

Also just thought of Mr Hyde versus Captain America. I think up to that point, Mr Hyde had been a Thor villain. Hyde worked really well as an adversary for Cap in that classic tale teaming up with Batroc.

Loved Wolverine and Tiger Shark duking it out in Wolverine's solo title.

Also Captain America and Bullseye went a couple rounds in the Streets of Poison story in Cap's book.

Those were fun!

FF Annual #3 was full of unusual and previously unseen set-tos, each covering in several panels what other more regular issues had space to do across numbers of pages - it remains one of my favourite ever comics, as it just bursts with energy as a result.

There are a few too-brief match-ups in there I could call out ( and some which no doubt did go on to happen at greater length in later years and other books ), but if was to pick just one, my inner 7-year old is yelling that it would have to be -

Quicksilver vs the Human Top

It's value to me is probably precisely because it's so brief - I absolutely loved those two panels as a kid, and I don't recall them ever going one-on-one again*. My older head is telling me such a throw-down might have become a bit 'one note', given it's a scrap between two speedsters, but I'm sure Stan and Jack could've raised the roof with it ...

*Edit - an internet search tells me otherwise me here - Quicksilver did indeed face off against Whirlwind later, in Avengers #83 - my bad ! Even then, it was only a matter of several panels amongst an Avengers / Masters of Evil fight, but I stand corrected !

The "New"/Elsewhen crew, though the Adams era team could work as well. I just liked the idea that Ultron thinks all organic life is worthless. Mutants are just variations among the bacteria. Could lead to some good hero/villain banter...
