These pages are just delightful!
Is it safe to say this is the John Byrne-preferred way to draw the webbing under Spider-Man's arms? The scalloping brings Steve Ditko to mind, first and foremost!

Another fun page -- it would be great as a Marvel Team-Up or Amazing Spider-Man story, but I can see why you chose to excise it from an X-Men story. Fun to venture with Spider-Man as he wall-crawls around.

The underarm webbing is a key component of the costume, imho.
The design of the underarm webbing has gone through many changes.
This scalloped version takes me right to the pages of Amazing Fantasy 15. It feels deeply... (grasping to capture the feeling) best I can come up with is "authentic".

I like how you portray Spider-Man as equally comfortable
standing on the walls and ceiling as he is the floor.
When did you start drawing him like that? I don't recall
you drawing him like that back in the MTU days.

I love JB's Spidey. He's a real mensch. He looks out for others, takes the danger on himself where he can, and isn't put off by appearances. The average person might see Kurt as a monster, but not Spider-Man.
He's seen so many other people have physical transformations over the years, for good and ill. I wonder if on some level his spider-sense helps him judge a person's character?

JB's Spider-Man is my absolute favorite version of the character. And underarm webs are key.

And something else I've noticed about Spider-Man. In terms of victory, the number one guy you want on your team is Captain America - he always finds a way to win. And Spider-Man is number two. He has the heart, the grit, the determination to always win out in the end. I mean, every super hero eventually wins, sure*, but Spidey seems to have a talent for it - again, as Cap does.
*Or becomes evil, but what fun is that?

Part of what made the Ditko-Lee run great was that its stories didn't just show Spider-Man beating the villains (nothing special there) but also beating the odds. Toe-to-toe, Spider-Man shouldn't stand a chance against the likes of Doctor Octopus, the Lizard, Electro, Sandman, etc.

Michael, I might disagree with you on a few of Spider-Man's rogue's gallery - but he couldn't just whump 'em into submission. He had to be SMART to win, and that's what's fun!
