Dave Kopperman, totally agree. Abrams to that point had done some pure popcorn movies like MI3 and 2009 TREK but while they had digestibility flaws, the popcorn was tasty enough to keep it down. ST:ID was completely inedible pap that didn't even contain empty calories. Just an insulting waste of time.

Every time I think of the Abramsverse movies, I always picture the directors, producers & writers sitting around and exclaiming, "We're gonna make STAR TREK bitchin' !!!"

There was so much wrong with ST:ID
The whole denial of Khan thing occurred because everyone knew
exactly what he was going to do & he was caught out - so he just
outright lied about it. There are times you try to misdirect, but this went
way, way beyond that.

But its biggest flaw was that nothing was earned.
Even during the film, you never got the sense that Kirk/Spock had
developed the long time, deep relationship that warranted that scene
when Kirk was dying.
They tolerated each other @ best.

Kirk & Spock of TWOK, we had seen them grow together, they clearly
respected & loved each other - when they fought, it hurt to watch,
because here were two people that desperately loved each other.
When Spock sacrificed himself, it ripped Kirk to shreds, & we knew
exactly why.

The Kirk & Spock of ID?No, never showed one iota of that relationship

James — Abrams’ approach was decidedly schizophrenic. At the same time he was demolishing half a century of lore, he was depending on cherished memories to spackle over the cracks.

Thus, fans were expected to provide his versions of Kirk and Spock with the gravitas of TOS.

I saw INTO DARKNESS in the theater. When Spock's
"KHAAAAN!!" bit came, I groaned audibly only to be drowned
out by laughter from several other audience members.

Exactly my take!

It's one thing to do an "homage", another to do it badly. Quite another, still, to execute it in such a way (intentionally or not) that it drops a big steaming turd all over the original. Bastardizing the best of Trek makes it the worst of Trek.

JB - agree 100%. And that strategy is only ever doomed to fail.

For the record, I've heard & read from plenty of other TREK fans that STAR TREK BEYOND is arguably the "best" of the three films, and was supposedly the one entry that leaned closest to the tone of TOS... and I really wanted to give that one a shot, if only because it featured one of the last performances of the late, great Anton Yelchin.

But much like INTO DARKNESS, I found the first 5 or 10 minutes just too dumb and insulting, to bother with the rest of the film.

Awe, Shaun, you didn't even get to the part where they
defeat a star fleet with the Beastie Boys.

I find ST Beyond unwatchable
