If Cerebro and the Sentinels could "sense" that Wanda and Pietro (and Polaris too) were mutants, then no latter-day retrofit can really make them not-mutants.  If the whole "Inhumans" mis-step hasn't already been done away with, I imagine it will be before too long.

Our own Paul Gibney long ago suggested Marvel's mutant overpopulation problem might be solved of it was "revealed" that there was some kind of virus that caused non-mutants to read as mutants. A fairly elegant solution that didn't violate anything.

I mentioned this in a private meeting with the then editor in chief, and the next thing I knew it was all over the internet that I wanted to apply this to ALL Marvel mutants.

In X-Men Gold, Marc Guggenheim wrote her situation "Years later, Stevie was elected to represent Connecticut's 3rd congressional district in the House of Representatives and invited X-Men leader and old friend, Kitty Pryde, to testify before Congress on the state of mutant affairs." Is the 3rd district near you?

Paul Gibney's solution could also be used as a way to have the Sentinels turn on humanity.

If you want the Sentinals to turn on humanity that’s easy enough done.
They once attacked the sun as being the source of mutations.
Obviously the other source of mutations is humanity. Without them, no
mutants.
