I think that's what got me on the lens tangent. But I guess light bending around Sue is not the same as light passing through a force field.

It wouldn't be much of a stretch that her ability to make invisible things and to make things invisible were connected somehow.  Is there a theoretical physicist in the house?

That the various manifestations of her power(s) are interconnect strikes me as a given. They all spring from the same source, after all.

(When I was a kid, though, Sue being able to produce invisible force fields all of a sudden seemed to come out of left field, unlike her being able to make other things invisible.)

Putting on my "Overthinking It" cap:  That's part of the reason why I thought about her powers as being an expression of the electromagnetic force - there's no direct connection between the invisibility and the 'force fields'.  While there Is a light field that inhabits a similar function for (light) radiation as a magnetic or electric field, the field and light itself don't exact much pressure.  So I thought about how she could do it without getting into quantum physics or telekinesis.  As I recall, it went something like this:

Her initial empowering left her with the intuitive ability to change her own visibility, then as she became accustomed to that, she could expand to 'casting' invisibility on other objects, revealing things unseen, etc. -  which suggests that she gets greater control over the visual parts of the EM spectrum, which is still somewhat intuitive though requires more experience.  The force field effect then comes online as a defensive tool, which she later learns to wield in other ways - still a fairly intuitive thing, but now something akin to magnetic or electrical fields?

Which is all bullshit, but no less bullshitty than the description of her powers I see has become canon in recent years - to quote: "invisible, psionic, hyperspace-based energy"... so... huh?

Crap like that reminds me of when I suggested some of Superman’s powers might be psionic, and a flurry of fans complained that I was trying to make his powers “realistic”.

It never ceases to amaze me that people ask for realistic
justifications for fantastical powers.

But where do Cyclops' eye beams come from?
You really need an explanation? They're eye beams.
Anything I say to you is impossible, so just go with it.
Be more bothered about why a writer cannot figure out
that if he can see it, he should be able to hit it.

Where does the extra mass of the Hulk come from?
Who cares? The thrust of a Hulk story should not be about
the physics of how he gets bigger - because then you are
into why the colour change, why the similar morphology,
why don't his trousers rip etc etc etc.
The thrust of the story should be about why he gets
bigger, what situation has caused him to get bigger and
what happens when he does.

Can Sue affect other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, like infrared, gamma rays, radio waves etc?

I'd be inclined to "limit" her power to visible light only.

This reminds me of an obsession I had when I was a teenager; I wanted to know SO BAD what Sue's force fields would look like if she used her powers to make them visible. I eventually decided that they might be made up of swirling colors like a soap bubble when it catches the light, but opaque--almost like the affect our host lent to the Negative Zone's distortion area.
Thinking back, I can't really recall why it seemed so important to me at the time.
