Luckily, here in TN, we just passed a law allowing both open and
concealed carry without a permit. Permits violate the Second
amendment, you see.

None of it makes sense, and concealed carry least of all. Aren’t guns supposed to scare off the badguys?

To paraphrase Dr Strangelove, the whole point of carrying a gun is lost if you keep it a secret!

Hold on, let me dust this off:  "Thoughts and prayers."  We certainly cannot do anything to prevent such tragedies from happening again....

Please note the heavy sarcasm.

Just once...once.  I want to see one of these "cowboys" actually prevent a mass shooting.  Where are all these God Fearing Heroes when the shit goes down?  I know this is not necessarily the thread for this statement, but it still rings appropriate.

"Cowboy" is unfortunately just the right term. These gun fetishists imagine themselves as heroes of the Old West, ready to bring down the bad guys. And they are perfectly willing to kill all the children necessary to support that fantasy.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Guns are not going ANYWHERE ANYTIME soon - and serious gun control is as elusive as ever.  So, are there other solutions we are missing?

"So, are there other solutions we are missing?"

Unfortunately, I don't think so.  There is nothing inherently bad about a gun.  Its just an object.  The problem is that crazy people and evil people get access to guns, and use them to do crazy and evil things.

So you have to either prevent them from having access, through gun control, or you have to somehow deter them from misusing guns when they do get access.

The question then becomes how do you effectively deter them?  We've tried to do it through harsh criminal penalties like the three strikes rule, enhanced punishment for crimes that involve a gun, etc., but those measures didn't work.  In some cases, there is no apparent answer.  Many of the mass shootings have been suicide missions, so how do you discourage someone by threatening them, when their intent is to die?

That brings us right back to gun control.  Preventing access is the only really effective way to stop the crazy people and the evil people from using guns, and it has been effective in other countries.

Somehow in other civilized countries they make gun control work.

I have a colleague in Germany who was telling me the hoops you have to jump through in order to get a firearm license. One of those hoops is a yearly psychological examination / clearance.

I can hear the nutjobs howling at the thought of that.
