I re-read that 1987 - 1992 series every year. And it is still as good as it was when it first came out.
I've recently re-read it as well.
It's absolutely brilliant, especially the first couple of years. Ahead of its time. Brilliant dialogue bits.
If they could adapt that spirit into a movie, it'd be a monster hit. Let's see how the Gunn version goes but clearly he's taken inspiration from this run.
Just by transcribing Flag's dad initial speech to the original Squad that ends with "Now the US government is giving you a second chance... You don't deserve it. But you will." that would make an amazing initial scene.
It was the next step to the "dysfunctional model" started by the original Fantastic Four and followed by X-Men, Teen Titans, etc. This guys didn't just have some group drama going on, they were straight up sociopaths that hated each other and the situation they were in but that made it all the more powerful when their metaphorical masks came off and they showed at least an iota of care. Again, brilliant.
It's very strange to me that Ostrander himself hasn't been able to become a superstar writer after that. Nothing he did after really clicked in the way his Suicide Squad run did.
I'll try this new series just for the sake of it.
