Lots of Indy stuff today...

Project Patron #1, Geiger #1- My LCS told me I may like these so i grabbed them. Project Patron is a superhero story with a twist, Geiger is Geoff Johns and Gary Frank. We'll see.

ENIAC #2 and Tankers #1- Bad Idea comics. I liked ENIAC #1 enough so I'll stick around. Tankers is intriguing because I enjoy Robert Venditti's writing.

Fire Power #10- Last issue's cliffhanger was interesting.

Suicide Squad #2- I liked issue #1, always looking for that Ostrander feel and have yet to find it in any other volume.

King in Black #5- This has been fine but I'm ready for it to be over.

  • Immortal Hulk # 45 - Still the best comic Marvel produces, and, sadly only 5 issues to go after this one.
  • Savage Dragon # 258

Shawn, I don't think we'll get anyone that will be able to do what John Ostrander did on Suicide Squad.

I re-read that 1987 - 1992 series every year. And it is still as good as it was when it first came out.

I need to do a re-read myself, Greg. I think the modern takes lean on the cool factor of Amanda Waller, Deadshot, and I guess more recently, Harley Quinn. I think morality that Rick Flagg, Bronze Tiger, and Vixen brought was super important to the mix. Speaking of Bronze Tiger, he's been woefully under-used the last couple of decades.

I've recently re-read it as well.

It's absolutely brilliant, especially the first couple of years. Ahead of its time. Brilliant dialogue bits.

If they could adapt that spirit into a movie, it'd be a monster hit. Let's see how the Gunn version goes but clearly he's taken inspiration from this run.

Just by transcribing Flag's dad initial speech to the original Squad that ends with "Now the US government is giving you a second chance... You don't deserve it. But you will." that would make an amazing initial scene.

It was the next step to the "dysfunctional model" started by the original Fantastic Four and followed by X-Men, Teen Titans, etc. This guys didn't just have some group drama going on, they were straight up sociopaths that hated each other and the situation they were in but that made it all the more powerful when their metaphorical masks came off and they showed at least an iota of care. Again, brilliant.

It's very strange to me that Ostrander himself hasn't been able to become a superstar writer after that. Nothing he did after really clicked in the way his Suicide Squad run did.

I'll try this new series just for the sake of it.

I wouldn't say that. His 1992 - 1997 Spectre run is very highly regarded. Grimjack is a great series. His Star Wars work is held in high regard, and Martian Manhunter is a very solid series.

Agreed on all of those (still holding out hope for Outlaw in Hell someday) and I liked Hawkworld, too. I'm a pretty big fan (got both of his Kickstarter books :-) ), but I wouldn't say he's ever been a "superstar" writer. Just one who is well regarded by those who have good taste. ;-)

One of my all time favorite comic moments:

Either way, I'm always happy to see others who recognize the glory of the Ostrander Squad series.

Anyway, back to the present:
FIRE POWER #10
SAVAGE DRAGON #258
SILVER COIN #1
WALKING DEAD DLX #12
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #63
AVENGERS #44

Also:

Should have Tankers #1 and Eniac #2 waiting for me at a (relatively) nearby store; the books from the Die Kitty Die Kickstarter arrived and got my latest Silver Age JLA: #43. Just 15 left to go...
