Really? I'm not so sure. Maybe it was more only a detour for awhile, a temporary sales spiker, but a bad influence ultimately? I bought them when they came out and I just found it a particularly exciting read. If there had been more comics of this quality and attention to detail, and there were some, I wouldn't have given up on them circa 1986-87 with a big handful of dead or disfigured superheroines to look back upon!

X-MEN 137 wasn't a milestone moment in comics history.
To you.
But it was for everyone else as to how comics treated the death of a major character going forward.
But let's frame this in "Rebecca" world. It's just "eh". A "temporary sales spiker". A "detour".
Seriously.

The milestone was the pinnacle of what the Marvel method can
produce when you have two creators so hungry to make the next issue
their best every month. The shift I sensed was “There’s our run, what
have the REST of you got?”
JB was just getting started!

Amazing how, after all these years, and multiple readings and
discussions, Brevoort’s article still has me rapt until the end. JB’s
pencils are just perfect. The panels of Jean leaving, Wolverine in the
window, and the unused splash page of Jean and Scott are sublime.
Wonder who owns that, and just how priceless it has become?

I guess it could get into what % of the general population is aware of the story, which is usually a pretty fruitless area for examination with usually unprovable guesstimates.
It was a great story, and Frank Miller's Daredevil was another favorite of the same time, but I feel their influences have been mostly negative (more characters killed to spike sales as an historic event or just get attention, everything doing dark and ninja to a laughable extreme). None of which is their fault however. They weren't cynically planned to be just those aspects, or even meant to have been a historic death in the case of Phoenix at all.
Well, it was also a bad influence on Chris Claremont... his success with the story and X-Men generally led him to sort of repeat the same riffs to the point of self parody and concentration on mutants to the exclusion of any other kinds of characters. Once one of my favorite writers of various comics with female characters to ' not this again'.

While I agree with the Milestone status of the Phoenix storyline, however in my opinion its impact has been watered down by WAY too many trips to the well over the years.
Professor X in a Phoenix outfit was a real low point for me.

Without a doubt, this was a milestone event - an actual hero, not a
supporting character, died.
& stayed dead - it wasn’t a hoax, an imaginary story or any of those
things - this was Jean Grey/Marvel Girl & she died. & she wasn’t
coming back.
That impacted comics for around a decade until she came back in X-
Factor.
We need to remember what it was like back then, not what it is like
now, with decades of revisions.

It was only 5 years. 137 was out in 1980 and she was brought back in
late ‘85 (cover date Jan ‘86).

This is the most beautifully drawn splash I've ever seen and even though I understand why it wasn't used it still blows my mind that it wasn't published.
