JB: Probably worked a little gerrymandering on the definition of “mutant”.

***

Well, that would be entirely in character.

It never occurred to me that Kurt would not recognize Doombots. Our view of events lies between Creator and Character. I think many vocal whiners don't get that.

A kind of poison seeped into comics over the decades. It probably started with everyone IN THE STORIES knowing Superman has a secret identity.

Q4JB: You continue to publish these in the monthly comic format. There's no reason why you shouldn't, of course. But I'm curious if there is any specific reason why you continue to publish as separate issues?

Mostly so I can break it up and buy time between “issues”.

This is taking something I didn't buy (in the later published comics that is), the original Jean Grey combining with the separate Phoenix that had taken her place, and makes me buy it and want more. Never say never (with a nod to Sean Connery).

I figure the Superman having a secret identity thing could be via some newspaper columnist writing that she thinks Superman spends time as someone else so he can see how 'the other side' lives.  After all, he has to sleep sometime doesn't he?  I could see a whole conspiracy group showing up trying to figure out what superheroes do when they aren't running around in their spandex.  Ugh.  Another reason to just 'shut up and enjoy the stories' as that is an ugly rabbit hole which I figure some writer will just have to go down if they haven't already.

I like that Kurt doesn't instantly know those are Doombots because, why would he?  In this reality he has never met Doom I think thus would have no reason to know.  The idea that every superhero knows every supervillain and how they operate is insane - imagine how hard that would be to keep up with (heck it is hard enough as readers).  I figure a few would try to keep up with it all (the Batman types who need to know this stuff to survive as a human in a super-human world) or would have a team keeping information and passing it along to them as needed.  But Kurt is 'just' a mutant who is part of a school, not an active super-hero fighting crime on the streets.

Somehow he has to find a way to contact the team?
Kurt --- rule #1: never leave home without your cellphone.

Bat-signal and FF signal flare notwithstanding,
with as much trouble as the X-Men land in, they should have Forge whip 'em up some kind of Star Trekkian communication devices.

I know, I know.
Forge = character outside of continuity.

Best Byrne style Nightcrawler headshot in 'print.'
Not starting a flame war, but Byrne Nightcrawler > Cockrum Nightcrawler any day of the week, and Dave was the man.

******

I think you did a good job of railing against that in your second issue of Superman, where Lex Luthor cannot accept that someone as powerful as Superman would have a day job as a lowly newspaper reporter.
