A sub-thread on the FanFic page (sparked by me asking about the X-Men's favorite breakfast beverages) had me thinking...
We don't see people eating together much in comics. It's kind of interesting, in that this is usually a time when people talk. It's a ready opportunity for breaks away from action.

Much as I actually enjoy drawing people sitting around talking, it can make for some DULL pages!

To this day, I recall how much I enjoyed seeing the guys together in the Kurt Busiek issue of Justice League of America (#224) - the one that introduced Paragon. Let me see if I can find it online...

Curious placement of the fold in the waitress' apron. Looks like Hal (?) is smoking a cigarette.Anyway--I rest my case. Dull. And certainly not worth a splash.

BTW, if we MUST do such "quiet" scenes, here's how. . . Multiple panels, so plenty of storytelling, and the "action" kicks in fast. (Pleased to report the original of this page adorns one of my Studio walls!)

Cool! True, if there was a three page stretch of "brunch with the X-Men," that's not giving the reader much to get excited over, but I do like these momentary interludes.

Jim Davis has successfully made half a career out of eating scenes.

Not to put down anybody, but, yes, if you're going to write a "dull" scene, make sure you have a FANTASTIC artist to draw it! Like the Garcia-Lopez page.
I have memories of Neal Adams drawing people just walking down a street in a two-page spread that blew me away! I remember Marshall Rogers cutting loose on what were technically dull scenes in things like DETECTIVES INC. and they're just glorious to look at. Gene Colan could make eating at a restaurant jump out at the reader.
That JUSTICE LEAGUE page could have been a wondrous showcase for an artist who "revels in the normal." It pays to have the writer and artist work closely together to maybe adjust things and bring out the best in each other.

I could look at Garcia-Lopez’s work for hours. Look at each figure on the page and the weight and dimension he gave them. Zounds!
