I thought The Ghost Rider really did not fit in a super-team. I do like the JB version though; have the Ghost Rider #20 and Daredevil #138 pair.

Darkstar was a great addition to The Champions, and I loved Tuska inked by Byrne on that one issue! In a way The Defenders circa #125-onward was Champions II with Angel and Iceman as members.

Randomly thought I'd look at the old commissions and found some others had the same thought just this month.

There's a long, long list of Marvel characters that I think JB draws better than anyone else. Hercules is on the list, though not one of the ones that immediately springs to mind. The Sentinels, of course, are also on the list.

Still love how that Sentinel arm is tearing apart.

Love the commission. Always wondered if there was an average time for how long it took to complete them. Dedicate one day in a charrette to getting it done?
Also, I never understood the raison d'être of either the Champions or the Defenders. Someone help me out.

The Defenders were defined as characters you’d not expect to be in a group. The Champions were “group books sell”.

Y’know, looking back I’m not exactly sure what Hercules is pulling out of that sentinel’s head!

Ha! Excellent, kind of the no-prize of group books ...

So here's a thing I couldn't quite put my finger at first until coming back and looking at it again: I don't think I've ever seen a sentinel fight an opponent their own size before.
Really threw me off and thought something was out of sorts!

In my first issue Bill Mantlo wrote Giant-Man fighting Stiltman.

Many’s the time I’ve said a surprising number of writers don’t think in pictures. They don’t SEE what it is they’re asking for. Most of the time this manifests as multiple camera angles in the same panel or—worse—actual movement.

In this case it was Bill not seeing that Stiltman got TALLER but not BIGGER. Giant-Man was much bigger than him, even if they were the same height.I called Bill and pointed this out. He said “Cheat.”

I had to cheat like crazy.

That Sentinel/G-M moment was kind of a way to cleanse my palette.
