…dialog within the stories would have people commenting to Johnny Blaze on his "funny, skull mask."*** The earliest example of this kind of writing I have been able to find -- and, granted, it's not like I have devoted a whole lot of effort to it! -- is in the issue of UNCANNY X-MEN that introduced Havok. Seen for the first time in costume, Alec Summers referred to his "corny codename" -- and yanked me right out of the story. Corny? Why corny? Any more "corny" than Cyclops, or Iceman, or Captain America? Just a tiny drop, but the leading edge of the tidal wave of "too cool for school" mentality that would soon overwhelm Marvel, and persist to this day.

Yeah, and my example also occurs within the first few appearances of the character in stories written by the character's creator. I had to think, why would the creator of the character want readers to think Ghost Rider looked like a guy in a goofy skull mask?

JB, this is tangential, but to what degree does the tactile experience influence your art?
I can imagine a young boy with the Renwal figures not only visually examining but also feeling through every variation in the forms of body and head.

I guess I would consider myself very tactile. I suppose that's where all the textures in my work comes from.

What bothered me even more was when dialog within the stories would have people commenting to Johnny Blaze on his "funny, skull mask." That would totally take me out of the story and make me shake my head. There is no way a guy with a flaming skull head should be mistaken for a mask!

It also doesn't seem like a very realistic reaction to me. I mean, if a person saw a leather-clad, flaming demon riding a motorcycle, I doubt he or she would find it "funny". The proper reaction would be for them to be scared for their lives!

Very nice piece.
For some other Ghost Rider work by a young JB, see the two part crossover story that he pencilled in GR #20 and Daredevil #138.

Which Ghost Rider do folks generally prefer? I'm not a huge fan of the
character but I'm wondering if people generally like the Johnny Blaze or the
Dan Ketch incarnation better.
Also, I must say, I think the piece would have looked cool with GR wielding a
chain and a spiked leather jacket.

Thats a great one.
And Ghost Rider by Shooter and you would have been cool, yet I preffer by far Uncanny X-Men by you and Claremont.
