Havok is a tough character to draw. Surprisingly so, for such a "simple" costume. Deceptively simple would be the proper phrase.Inking this piece this morning I was reminded once again of the irony in Havok, that a character who is all about big, explosive power requires a very delicate touch in the rendering. Those hoops on his head, for instance. Make them too big or too small, or too thick or too thin, or any combination, and they just look GOOFY. Dave Cockrum, whose chief mutant power seemed to be an uncanny ability to draw just about any character and absolutely NAIL them, seemed alway to have a wee bit of trouble with our young Mr. Summers, here. It was looking at how Dave drew Havok, in fact, that put in my brain the warning to be very, very careful when I did so myself. And speaking of irony -- sad, isn't it, that a character whose costume was pretty much DESIGNED to be CGI, long before such a thing existed, finally arrives on screen and the filmmakers choose to make him very
ordinary.
