Have I ever mentioned how much of a kick I get out of a simple phrase like that? And I don't mean the praise -- for which, much thanks! -- but the fact that there is such a thing as "my" Batman. That there are people who can make an association in their minds between my favorite character* and me!

JB - I did not know that (that Batman is your favourite character). This brings to mind a question - when DC first approached you to do Superman did you ever tell them you'd rather do Batman instead? And was there ever a time that you came close to doing an extended run on Batman?

No, to both.

Not sure what would have happened if that had come out differently. When I was hired to do MAN OF STEEL they were not thinking about rebooting Batman, tho unbeknownst to anyone in DC editorial that was exactly what was happening, in the form of THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS and BATMAN: YEAR ONE. Since Frank didn't know much Batman lore, and so made up a lot of stuff for those series -- the origin Catwoman and Alfred and Gordon's backstories, for instance -- the Millerized versions became canon somewhat under the radar.

As to an extended run -- Batman is a character I prefer to visit occasionally.

Still blown away by the beauty of the backgrounds. Looking at the coloured version I was struck by how I like the body frame you've given Batman here -- reminds me a little of the kind of build Mazzuchelli gave Batman. Athletic, lithe, deep chest, but not steroidal, for want of a better word.

I've been without a computer for a few days and started going into JB Forum withdrawal---getting back on today has been great and I think this image has been my favorite of several that were completely awesome.

When I returned to reading comics in the early 1970s, after a hiatus that had begun in the mid 60s, I was just in time to catch Neal Adams working his magic on Batman (mostly thru back issues). The definitive image of Batman, for me, had been Dick Sprang's version from the Fifties, but Neal certainly showed us there was more than one way to skin a bat--especially since he started out by staying on model. One had the impression that, different as his interpretation was, he was still looking at the same "live model" as the artists who had gone before him. The singer had not yet become more important than the song.
