Yeah, Joe, it's about time we get another commission from you. You always have interesting ideas! Yeah, I would have been surprised if the commissioner didn't take the piece. It's a flawless one and to be honest, I feel that Red Skull fits the piece better than Baron Blood would. I won't be looking for this on Ebay now, but it gives me a few extra dollars to save for my next commission.

I feel that Red Skull fits the piece better than Baron Blood would.••• A Baron Blood piece would be totally different in tone.

Nice one indeed. It's great the comissioner accepted the piece anyway. But I have this question and it's not tongue in cheek or anything but are corrections totally impossible on commissions ? I mean the're pretty common on comic art so would it have been totally unacceptable to stick in the right character ?

For the money people are paying, they deserve pristine artwork. If I make a big goof (or just don't like how the piece is turning out), I tear it up and start over. And, as noted, I couldn't just replace the Skull with the Baron. Totally uncharacteristic pose.

That seems to be something that people don't get - drawing isn't "just" about rendering the figures in proportion and perspective, it's the act of composition of the piece. I'd imagine it's not much fun as an artist to be given excessive direction, or having to do something like a cover recreation, as there is less choice/freedom in the act of creation.
Then again, I imagine that Halle Berry is going to call any minute now ...

I'd imagine it's not much fun as an artist to be given excessive direction, or having to do something like a cover recreation, as there is less choice/freedom in the act of creation.••• One of Jim Warden's jobs as my art agent is to discourage people from trying to "write" the commissions they order. Of course it's perfectly understandable (especially given the money involved!) that people will want to try to make sure the commission they get is EXACTLY what they want. Problem, tho, is that not many people can really think in pictures. And this is true of a lot of comicbook writers, too! So often the first mistake is to ask for real movement, of figures, or camera, or both. Mistake #2 is asking for multiple camera angles in the same shot. And people seem genuinely not to be aware they are doing these things. Bottom line, tho, generally speaking it's better to just let me draw like John Byrne, rather than trying to tell me HOW to draw like John Byrne!* ----------------------------- * Just for funzies, what say we forego the usual half dozen posts from people trying to second guess the customer, and figure out WHY they would try to tell me how to draw like John Byrne!

I'd love to find out the most detailed commission request in the history of commissioned art. I could see some impertinent fanboy's going the full-script route. ••• Suffice to say, we finally had to place on the Index -- mostly for the sake of Jim's sanity -- the name of one customer who not only insisted on "writing" his pieces, but would not stop pestering Jim with an endless torrent of tweaks!
