I remember Batman 3D graphic novel to feature the bat symbol with the yellow ellipse, but otherwise this commission does evoke memories of that very well-drawn comic!  JB should have done more Batman.

I love the tilt of the buildings here....really creates a cool feel to this piece. Then there's the cape (no one draws them like you), then there's that gargoyle....man this one is gonna be tough to top

Is it weird that my favorite part is the little statue in the top right?

Very weird, Rich. I suggest you seek psychiatric help. Or possibly have yourself committed.

I've always preferred Batman's ears that length ala Neal Adams. I never cared for the long exaggerated ears of Bernie Wrightson's or Kelley Jones' Batman and didn't really care for them when they were shorter either ala the silver age Batman or more recently Jim Lee's take. I thought Neal made them the perfect length which is probably partially why John Byrne does one of my favorite Batman illustrations in comics (my other favorite Batman artists being Neal Adams, Jim Aparo, and Marshall Rogers.. the ears have it). I think Batman is probably my favorite character for JB to draw to as a result of this even though he's never been particularly associated with Batman. Would have loved to have seen him draw a lot more Batman comics. Or write more too for that matter.

I can do short, and I can do long. In GENERATIONS I did both, with increments in between. Mostly, it's a question of vintage.

 | (Somewhat related: in recent years I have noticed some fans complaining when artists -- myself included -- draw Batman's cape "too long." "Wouldn't he trip over it??" Add this to the list of Things that Tell You You're Too Old for Comics.)

Now that I think about it you also did the short ears on Batman in Batman & Captain America which is one of my favorite books of yours, so obviously you can make both work. I guess I was more picturing your Man of Steel take on Batman which is one of my favorites.

I'm also realizing I much prefer Batman without the yellow oval around the bat symbol on his chest.
