I think working for the big two is a bit like a musician having hit singles but then expanding their creative output elsewhere and having less commercial appeal.
But - hardcore fans will always follow!

Speaking of urban myths and the like, THIS.DO NOT make a drinking game out of this! If you take a shot every time you hit a falsehood, you'll have cirrhosis before you get the the end of the "essay". (Do note, however, that the piece skips over Wolfman's testimony, especially the part where he describes me as someone who "doesn't create characters." Under oath, no less)

The Peter David story is wrong, too, even going with David's version. David has said he did get the xeroxed pages from Marvel in his then-position in the sales department. His defense was that the pages came directly from the editor for promotion, as I recall, not that he didn't get them, at all. And if David was not at the convention, as the writer at that link suggests, why does he have a story about JB ranting and throwing a chair? I think David might have disputed which con it happened at, but that site makes it seem as if JB made up the event, regardless of the details that differ between David and JB's versions.

It would be nice to have to the community's cooperation, or even the creators themselves :)

Ok, so it's been some time since I read Peter David's version of things, and, yes, he disputes the incident happened at a convention (NOT that it did happen, or that he wasn't at the same place as JB when it happened). He says it was at a retailer's meeting. Anyway, here is a link to David's archived posts from his site where he discusses things as he says he remembers it happening:

So there I was, sitting at my table at the NYC con, merrily signing autographs and bantering with the fans,Up walks one lanky kid, maybe 20 or so. "So Guardian is the one who's gonna die." I smile, knowingly. "Maybe. Maybe not." "No, it's Guardian. Peter David is handing out xeroxes of the pages." I had read in fiction where characters were so angry the world turned red around them. I had not experienced it before that moment. I thundered across the room to his table, demanded to see what he was handing out. Yep. Xeroxes of the pages on which Guardian died. I honestly felt like the floor was tipping beneath me. I could not find my voice. I turned and stumbled toward the exit, tripping over (but not throwing) a chair in the process. Somehow I found my way to my room. A few moments later there was a knock at the door. It was Tom DeFalco and Peter David. I expressed my fury in words. DeFalco tried to calm me down. David bleated that he was "only doing his job". His job being to ruin my story? Finally they left. I lay on the bed wondering if I was going to have a heart attack.

I certainly wouldn't want to know the fate of a character or situation before reading the story - there's no fun suspense buildup or the exciting element of surprise. I can imagine as a writer with all the work that goes into setting up a revelation it would be beyond frustrating!

Can you imagine that happening now, with the internet? The scans would be on Twitter immediately. What a mess.

OMG. I just spent a while trying to speed read the 31 pages of that old thread. Around and around and around we go...
I did like Howard Mackie's contributions, so it wasn't a complete waste of time, but boy, there were a lot of pages even after the picture of the dead horse...

I read the first ten issues of Alpha Flight as reprints that appeared as back-up stories in Marvel UK's version of Secret Wars.
For whatever reason, they stopped at #10... Not long after that, I discovered US imports and picked up a back issue of #12 at my also-newly-discovered LCS (skipping out #11). I don't recall for sure if it was before or after #12, but I do recall the guy in the store telling me Guardian was his favourite character "And they killed him".
Love that double-sized #12.
