Read this today.....

After more than two centuries of loyal service, the penny – the lightest coin in our pockets, the heaviest in history – was officially laid to rest yesterday. The cause of death: irrelevance and escalating expense, according to the Department of Treasury.

Born in 1793 and bearing the likeness of Abraham Lincoln since 1909, the one-cent coin weathered recessions, recoveries and the ringing of registers across the nation. Once a proud emblem of thrift — “a penny saved is a penny earned” — it gradually became more nuisance than necessity, abandoned in couch cushions and on sidewalks and costing nearly four cents to make.

The penny is survived by the nickel, dime, quarter and a generation of sentimental Americans who still stoop to pick it up for luck.

In the end, it simply didn’t make cents.

Personally, I am going to miss the penny. I am one of those people that stooped to pick it up and put it, along with other "change" in my "piggy" bank.

Once the bank is full, approximately every 2 years, I will take my coins to the credit union coin counter to see how much I had saved.

So long, Penny!!!!!  You will be missed in future generations.

The Penny Dreadful.

Save your pennies.

Pennies from heaven.

A penny for your thoughts.

Future generations aren't going to have any idea what we
were talking about...

A current penny weighs approximatley quarter of a gram more than the current dime.

James,  it will take years for pennies to fall out of circulation, so don't cry over them just yet.  Just wait for the "Rounding Down" Sales.

I've read reports of shortages. How accurate this is, I don't know. e.g. This CBS story

Edited to get my quote formatting sorted

For decades I've been putting away wheat pennies as I come across them in circulation. Kind of a neat feeling when it happens, oh and one Indian head cent.

Still looking for that ever elusive double stamped 1972 penny, ever since those comic book ad's of the seventies.

Come back to Canada!  We already have the Loonie and the Twoonie.  I’m surprised no one is talking about a $5 coin yet.

And US bills need a major update to plastic bills like Canada.  Ours last way longer, and are far harder to counterfeit.

Oh man, I've wanted a $5 coin since the day they
introduced the toonie. I want to carry around a coin
pouch, like Conan.

I grew up with the halfpenny coin in England (phased out when I was 9 years old). You could actually buy stuff with it as well -- a cola bottle was 1p (i.e. the gummy) but there were half penny chews you could get (I forget which exactly).
