I especially love the sweater texture!

Interesting choice of light source, too, coming from behind the open door. The lighter tones on Heather really balance the gray and black of the piece.

Wow, no internet connection for a few days and when I get back there are even more awesome commissions. I thought this year had to be over with the flurry of awesome ones JB did prior to the last few days. What a year, with this a very powerful image to finish with.

An argument could be made that the LACK of a Tsunami of letters
about the 'mistake' Courtney made was because we all WANTED him
to come back and really didn't give a rats arse about the details!

A combination, I think, of that plus some of the outrageous resurrections fans had been forced to embrace over the years. After all, by the time Mac died, a death in a Marvel comic usually prompted a response of "When will s/he be back?"

I definitely fell in the former category! Not so much the latter, since I would have only been following comics for 2 years at the time of the 1985 "resurrection", so I hadn't really dealt with a character coming back from the dead yet.

When I read #25, I immediately recalled that "Heather" panel that puts the lie to the resurrection story. I had assumed that JB just made a mistake - but I didn't care, because I was happy to see Mac back.

And it cleverly demonstrates why Heather didn't scrutinize the story. She was just happy to have him back. Perhaps she would have if she had more time to digest it, but I imagine that it was only a matter of days between issues 25 and 26.

Come to think of it, I did deal with one other "resurrection" at that point - X-Men #175, where Dark Phoenix was thought to have returned. But since the first comic I ever bought was just 4 issues before that, I had no attachment to Jean Grey at that point.

Wonderful piece - as I collect commissions myself, I have come to realize that things always seem to look much more vivid and sharper in gray-tones. BRAVO!

In re-reading the old reading club thread, it looks like we never got an answer about the 1966 tv show Heather was referencing. JB?

••

You'll have to remind me of the reference.

* *

I'm paraphrasing from memory, but Heather has an outburst having been forced to wait hours for Mac's arrival with nothing but the telly for company saying there has been nothing worth watching on TV since 1966.  There was speculation that the reference was to Star Trek, I recall, but the year was wrong.

Hm. Nothing specific I can think of.

I wonder, if one were to play out this scene more realistically, this time without the Comic Code to worry about (Ryan, look away!!):

Would the force of the explosion have blown Mac's body to pieces? Then again, if it were that strong, then it could have killed Heather, too - and we couldn't have that!

Funny, I was just looking at the big scan again. Realized I couldn't have this hanging on my wall (despite it being a phenomenal piece of art and one of my favorite commissions ever).  It's too much.  Crazy how I met Mac in #11, he was an instant favorite, then found out a few months later he was dead. When I read #12 a few months after that, it still (and continues to) hit me hard. I cry fairly easy at TV and movies, too, so no big surprise I've welled up a few times at the commission.  Dammit, JB!  You're pretty good at that storytelling stuff.
