What's inspiring is that it's all there -- layout, design, pacing...Nice.

Hmm... Just noticed I gave Gary Cody a co-creator credit. All these years later, I have no recollection of what his contribution(s) might have been. I wonder if he does!

I was curious, so I checked out the auction on eBay. I had to do a general search for "John Byrne original art," as the auction title didn't contain the words "Hard Hat" or "Gay Guy."

Sounds like the seller was a friend of your's, JB. From the auction's description:

"...All art and coloring was done by John and the pages eventually ended up given to my sister, who then passed them on to me.  I was lucky enough to have John as a friend in my younger days and our family's stayed close until his parents passed.  In that time John gave me artwork (some signed pieces as well) and I watched him grow to be the highly gifted artist he is today.

Although we lost touch as we aged I still consider knowing him one of the great experiences of my life.  Despite all that, we all have those times in our life when money is necessary, and if you have seen lately I have sold some of John's gifts to make bills.

I just came across these pages a few days ago and since that aren't some of my favorites decided to pass them on for another fan to appreciate.  Keep in mind these have traveled and aged.  They contain wrinkles on the sides, some fading, small tears, and folded corners....but despite this and considering the age (early to mid 60's I believe) they are still excellent and a great example of early Byrne artwork...

Rereading The Fantastic Four that had the character Karisma in it, it's fun to see that Gaylord Le Guye aka GAY GUY also made an appearance!

Incidentally, I owe the punchline of the FF story to Jo Duffy. There was a female staffer up at Marvel who wore a lot of makeup, and Jo used to refer to her as "cosmetically aware". I used that to describe Karisma's "powers".

I suppose I don't have to tell you I receive a flurry of mail chastising me for misspelling "cosmically aware".

sigh

One of my favorites for a very long time.  Absolutely underappreciated.  His work is always consistent, compelling and has so much energy to it.  A shame he's not mentioned along with some of the greats.
