Did you have anything to do with the creation of the
X-man, Bishop? I can't remember if that was during
your brief return to X-men or not. How many
characters in the " X-universe" would you consider
yourself directly responsible for the creation of ?

Bishop stands in my mind as the official Beginning of the End at Marvel. The point, one might say, at which it became Mar***. Bishop was "created" not on an order from editorial, but from marketing. It was decided introducing a new X-Man would boost sales -- and that to be doubly sure he must be Black.[

Sounds just like how Stan, Steve and Jack worked, doesn't it?

As to your second question, Kitty Pryde is really about it form me, X-Menwise. I prefered playing with the old and not-so-old toys.

So once marketing said, "Make us a black X-Man", who
designed and named the character?

Thanks for the response JB, I remember wondering about this
before but never asked until Louis brought up this thread. At
the time I remember really enjoying Whilce Portacio's artwork. I
first discovered him on "Punisher" and as I recall he did a
GREAT Kingpin!

Anyone know what the deal was with Whilce? Was he just the
slowest penciller in history or was there more to his demise
than that? Remember "Wetworks"? There were
advertisements in Image comic books for that title literally two
years or more before it ever debuted! Then it lasted a handful
of issues and I haven't heard of Portacio since...

How is "Whilce" pronounced?

I think his sister or somebody in his family got real
sick. I remember him taking a lot of time off for it. By
the time he returned, the Image craze had died
down.

His sister died while he was drawing number one. That put him out of drawing for a while. He is currently working on another Wetworks series for Wildstorm.

JB,

Though I can't really think of her as a X-Man, what about the White Queen?
