Not sure how this may fit your parameters Matt. 
How about Darkseid . Kirby's evil "Dark God" to his "Light God" Highfather. 
Also Kirby using a "dark side" variant about 5 years before STAR WARS is too cool.

Through A Mirror Darkly is first dark thing that came to my mind, followed by Philip K. Dick's drugs and paranoia novel Through A Scanner Darkly.

I definitely remember Dick Cheney saying in an interview while VP something about sometimes the U.S. has to go to the dark side, assumed it was a tar wars reference, and made around when the Abu Graib photos were being shown.

After Star Wars is when I think such terminology made a resurgence, likely affecting Claremont's use of "dark Phoenix", and it would stay current as long as there was a Star Wars franchise movie around to which it was central. Usually when there is a great story in comics it becomes a bad influence... thus Dark Phoenix and Elektra in Daredevil started a trend of bad-ass sexy ladies in comics, and probably also helped Catwoman, the original Dragon Lady of the comic books, gain renewed interest and attention as well. I wonder if it might have inspired one other memorable one; the Terra betrayal saga in Wolfman & Perez' New Teen Titans?

Doug, I had considered Darkseid, as it is a play on the words, as you say.
