I have a bad neck from shaking my head in disbelief.

Fingers and toes crossed from me here in the UK.

Extending any empathy towards Melania is more than my dwindling supply of it can manage.

A ballot drop box in Washington was literally set on fire, with hundreds
of ballots inside at the time.

Police found explosive devices were used early Monday morning.

They’re going to desperate lengths to mess with this election already.

By the way, first post here, hello everyone.  Naturally for me it's about politics!

A ballot drop box in Washington was literally set on fire, with hundreds
of ballots inside at the time.

The Republican term for this sort of thing is "ratfking" which was coined back in the Nixon years.  Modern Republicans clearly do not believe in the idea of democratic self-government, and many of their supporters would much rather be the privileged subjects of an authoritarian regime rather than citizens of a free state.  Evangelical types in particular have lived in an authoritarian culture their entire lives, so the end of American-style democracy doesn't mean much to them.  I also recommend the books by Rick Perlstein describing the rise of the current conservative movement since Goldwater.

I already voted by mail, I'm thankful they make this very easy here in Chicago.  As a retired person, I am watching all this unfold with great trepidation, because if Trump gets back in (which is still a possibility), it would definitely have a negative affect on me, as certain people have hated Social Security since the beginning.  We shall see.

More of a probability.

We work very hard to forget how racist and misogynistic much of our nation is, but truth is truth.

Cannot find a lot of cause to be optimistic that Trump won't win the electoral vote. I don't see him losing North Carolina or Georgia or Arizona. That puts Kamala in a tight spot, needing to capture Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, all three, just to get to 270.

Crikey!

I agree.  That this race is even in question proves that, especially after the events in MSG.

I think I can say with a reasonable amount of certainty that Trump will not win the popular vote.  He never has, after all.  But they can ratfk their way in like they did before, with him and with GW Bush.  The question is, if he loses the popular vote by a bigger margin than before and he still gets in, what will we do about it?

I imagine, nothing.

What CAN we do? America is not a democracy, no matter how much we toss that word around. It’s right there in the Pledge of Allegiance. “The REPUBLIC for which it stands….”

That’s what the Founding Fathers wanted. That’s what we’ve got.

Yes, indeed -- a republic... if, to mar a bit Ben Franklin's quote, we can keep it...!

Millions upon millions of votes for president irrelevant under the current electoral system. Our Republic should be a lot more representative than that. The Founders gave us mechanisms to change and improve. But we need the guts and smarts, and sometimes sheer luck, to get that done.
