JB Your latest commission involving Golgotha is pretty neat. I love the design of the character and think it was a great choice to have him as a Captain American villain.
I love the design of the character. I know next to nothing about the character. I so looking up info on him. I saw he was created for Danger Unlimited. I've only read one issue of the series. It is disappointing to discover that there were only four issues.
I read the reason there wasn't more was because of the failure of 'Legend' and the 90's crash. Which brings me to my question.
Had those events not happen. Do you think DU had the potential to be a lasting and successful series? I can't say for certain if it would have. I like what I read so I'm bias.
Also could you tell me how many appearance Golgotha has made in your comics and what comics were they? I'd like to hunt them down.

DANGER UNLIMITED was actually killed by the idiotic ordering policies of far too many shops back then. XXX units were ordered of the first issue, XX of the second, X of the third -- all before the first had even been shipped. I realized that those who bought the first issue would not be able to find the third or the fourth. No way to build an audience.

I've mentioned this before but I often wish JB would find a way to relaunch DANGER UNLIMITED thru IDW as a regular series.

I'd settle for a one-shot! Double-sized of course...

JB, I have a follow up question: Was there an ending planned to DU (like NEXT MEN)?

Not as such. DU was my FF. There would be revelations, and occasional changes of course, but no ending.

A one shot wouldn't do it for me.

I had discovered DU about a year ago, and soooo loved the small sampling. If there was ever the potential for one those great JB runs it was right there." Damn you direct sales, damn you all to hell!"

I had to hunt for issue #3, despite being at the comic store every week when the books were released. I can't remember where I got issue 3 from or if I had to order it.

STAR TREK: NEW VISIONS has been in an amazing groove with the last few issues. It's great to see a continuing series from JB, and I would like to see DANGER UNLIMITED have similar room to develop and grow.

Well, since no one else is writing The Fantastic Four, ...
Seriously tho: nobody else is writing the Fantastic Four. The world is a poorer place for it.

What did retailers say was the logic behind decreasing the number of copies ordered?

I remember having problems finding first issues of certain series (including Next Men) because the speculators had bought them out. Another way to not build an audience: 5 people buy all copies of issue #1 with no interest in buying any more.

Indeed, now that Marvel has voluntarily put the Fantastic Four in publishing limbo, it's a great time for the return of Danger Unlimited.

I'd love to see more Danger Unlimited! It was great to see more Next Men a few years back and I always hoped we'd see some more DU too. I also enjoyed Babe.

Another way to not build an audience: 5 people buy all copies of issue #1 with no interest in buying any more. And we wonder why the industry failed? This was typical of the period. Shops over-ordered first issues, so there would be lots for the speculeeches. Ditto the second issue, tho not so many. By the third issue they were down to the number they expected to sell to regular readers -- who had not been able to get the first two!!

Is there a reason you've not brought the book back through IDW? They seem receptive to publishing your material in all sorts of formats. IDW published a trade edition collecting the 4 issues of DU. It seems logical to now follow up with a new 4 issue mini series that continues on from the original series -- then IDW could publish TWO new trades - one collecting the new mini and one collecting BOTH mini's. Free money to you in sales royalties. Rinse, wash, repeat - with a third mini series.

I would happily buy new DANGER UNLIMITED comics, but it's more of the TRIO, TRIPLE HELIX and CONCLAVE universe I'm eager to see!

Add my vote: I'd love to see more DU as an ongoing. Now I'm wondering-- would DU be part of the same world as Trio and Triple Helix? Hm.

It's sorta possible. Golgotha was pulled from another universe in Triple Helix, I believe.

My local shops both still do basically the same thing. They order the number of copies that their pull list subscribers have committed to buy, and for the most part, that's it. The extremely mainstream DC and Marvel titles (Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, X-Men, Avengers) they order 1 or 2 extra copies, max, for the shelf.
Though I stopped getting monthly comics a few years back, I recently thought about getting my feet wet with a couple of individual titles again...when I found out I was going to have to go through all kinds of wrangling to get them locally, I decided against.
If a book store operated that way, it would go out of business. When I hear about a book on NPR or somewhere else and get interested, I can walk into a local bookstore and usually find it pretty quickly. The idea that the same isn't true of comics is dumbfounding.

I'd like to see an illustration by John Byrne arranged like this but with Danger Unlimited in the middle, the Fantastic Four on the left, and the Challengers of the Unknown on the right.
