It was the realization for me that I could ONLY draw the latter but had zero aptitude for drawing superhero action that I knew a career in mainstream comics was not in the cards. Most of my characters look like they're waiting for a bus (and I could definitely draw the bus...).

Now I'm having flashbacks of those Paul Kirchner 'Bus' comics! :^D
If you haven't seen them just google Kirchner and Bus.
I think if Captain America #250 had come along a slight bit later there'd have been actual buttons/badges of that art on the cover for sale in the comic shops. I remember buying a Paul Smith Phoenix one and likely would've wanted Cap for Pres too.

T’is a pity things worked out as they did—especially since it was in part due to my misunderstanding of Roger’s reason for leaving. Had I been more clear on that, maybe I would have accepted Jim Salicrup’s suggestion that I take over the writing on the series. Altho, Shooter’s Whim of Iron was in full force just then, which was part of my reason for leaving.

#253-254 is still my favorite Cap story. I remember the What If for had Captain America been elected president with a sweet Marie Severin cover (Ed Koch and Doctor Strange among the attendees)!

JB, do you recall whose idea it was to use Baron Blood in that run?

Rebecca, I'm in complete agreement about #253-254.
(The War and Remembrance TPB is on my Amazon wishlist right now.)

This is news to me. The last I heard was that Shooter mandated single-issue stories after Stern/Byrne were already at work on already-okayed extended storylines. Was there another reason for Stern leaving?
