Obviously the Artists thread made me wonder about this.

My suspicion is that we could probably narrow the writer list down to TOP 5?

Roger Stern (with JB, natch)
Mark Gruenwald (the definitive writer of most Gen Xers I presume)
Ed Brubaker

Steve Englehart
Jack Kirby's brief '70s run?

Stern and Englehart are the two that come to mind. I have a lot of Gruenwald now and enjoy them well enough, especially the 'Cap Wolf' issues which pulled me into checking at 'era' out.

I haven't tried Kirby's '70s issues, I have to admit to avoiding them in the past and sticking to ones before and then after. I know he created him as well as Black Panther (also have ones before and after Kirby) but I just wasn't ready for it maybe?

A question before I answer: Did Kirby do his own plots on his run with Stan?

Ooh, thanks!
I did this from memory but realize now that I have conflated the Dematteis run with the Gruenwald run! I'll need to go back and sort out the differences!

I stopped reading Cap during Mark Gruenwald's run (didn't love it at the time). I know if is often well remembered for its characters and length. I think I need to go back and investigate!

Looking it up, Kirby plotted a lot of his Tales of Suspense stories with scripting from Stan Lee.

So Kirby/Lee is tops for me.
Stan Lee solo is next.
