My heart goes out to the families of the loved ones whose lives were lost from this tragedy.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge is about 20 minutes from my house and I have driven across it more times than I remember.

The impact of its destruction - from the daily commute, jobs, and the economy - will be felt for years to come.

My mom lives south of there. I flashed to all the times I decided not to drive across the bridge over the years.

When I watched the video I was white-knuckling watching the cars drive over. Fortunately the ship's crew was able to warn authorities in time for the bridge to be closed just moments before impact.

It was crazy watching the bridge topple like that, but according to random people calling themselves engineers on the internet, no bridge is designed to withstand its supports being rammed by a container ship.

Also according to a structural engineer named Ben Shafer interviewed on CBS News (8:26).

Another reminder that we all live on the razor’s edge, and it doesn’t require a lunatic with a gun to strip away our ultimate freedom—life itself.

Adding to the tragedy, we must now brace for weeks and months of the blame game, as politicians and conspiracy nuts seek to twist this to their own agendas.

The crew of the container ship sent warnings out before the collision which I'm sure saved a few people. I also found it a bit shocking to see the vehicles with their lights crossing in the footage I saw from right before the collision, but couldn't see that any were still on that span that went down when it hit.

I have to cross a bridge that looks about as spindly to reach Oregon. There's an old Route 66 episode you can see filmed there that shows it under construction. I wish they'd put like twenty extra supports on that highest end!

I'm sort of waiting for Biden to be to blame somehow for the collapse it being an election year, in fact I hope they go overboard on it and maybe it could be that stupid straw too many and break the spell for some?

The blaming started immediately and it’s been horrifying. Republicans
wasted no time in blaming first DEI (ie “the Blacks”), then Pete Buttigieg (ie
“the groomers”), and then someone invented a global terror conspiracy
theory (ie probably “the Jews”). Now they blame all three, although more
will surely come.

My favorites are the "It's a CIA PsyOp" and the "Leave The World Behind" comparisons (because obviously the Obamas are behind it all).

Nothing like destruction and tragedy to bring out the crazies.

People who are frustrated and feel powerless in their own lives are quick to turn to conspiracy to explain the world. They may not have any control over things, but at least they have a conviction that they know what’s REALLY going on.

Societal paranoia. Pathetic.

Those last trucks and cars to speed across just moments before the crash and collapse... great-good-god-damn, man...!

We are just any of us inches from doom!
