I find it interesting at the backlash of fans who are not happy with female/minority Spider-Man, Iron Man, Wolverine, etc.  (I happen to be in that camp too--I would rather take Thunderstrike or Beta Ray Bill over female Thor).  It's neat though that DC had success with this -- Hal Jordan was a "new" Green Lantern, Wally West was a "new" Flash and there have been many Robins over the years

***

In fairness, Marvel had a black Iron Man, a female black Captain Marvel and a female Guardian among others when back in the eighties but these seem to work better than what they are doing now as their introduction felt part of ongoing storylines rather than simply Events. (That said, I now appreciate that Heather becoming Guardian / Vindicator was a terrible idea; my 14-year old self went with it though.)

They Cancelled the flagship title Fantastic Four without any remorse.

***

It felt like the tail wagging the dog. I can't know for sure, but some websites reported that the negative perceptions surrounding the 2005, 2007 and 2015 films resulted in Marvel sending the title on a "vacation".

If true, that angers me. No way should shitty film interpretations (the fault of the directors) lead to a comic being cancelled.

What I heard was that Marvel cancelled FANTASTIC FOUR so as not to be seen "promoting" movies they don't own. Same reason the mutants started turning into Inhumans.

That's what I heard too, and I'm sure it's true.  However, it brings to mind the question--Why publish ANYTHING that's not connected to the movies?

I mean, it didn't really HURT them to promote FANTASTIC FOUR, right?  It's not like that FF movie (if you want to call it that) was directly up against IRON MAN 3 that week or anything.

So then the thinking seems to be--ONLY do comics based on movies you are making or plan to make!  I almost wouldn't mind that!  We'd have a good solid ten or twelve monthly series based on (male) THOR, (Steve Rogers) CAPTAIN AMERICA, (high school student) SPIDER-MAN, etc.  I really could live with that!

But cancelling FANTASTIC FOUR because it's not their movie makes as much sense as cancelling MS. MARVEL, SHE-HULK, billionaire SPIDER-MAN, female THOR, DEVIL DINOSAUR & MOON GIRL, crazy MOON KNIGHT in a white suit, Korean HULK, their weird mixed AVENGERS/X-MEN books, etc--most of their line!--because none of those are going to be movies either.

Well, Fantastic Four is a classic series and needs to be rebooted until they get it right. There's no reason that story can't be as big as all the rest.

It should probably be done for television as a series that focuses on the family aspect and Doom's continuous threat....

And movies isn't the only license, cartoons are huge too....
You can't cut that off - it'd be stupid to remove the thing that makes the movies have their built in audience..

I don't know anyone who was high on Guardians of the Galaxy. The teaser at the end of one of those movies looked terrible..it was Benicio el Toro in weird comedy make-up.

BUT! Make a good movie (not a movie to sell more comics) and you'll always strike gold. ANYTHING could work....

Make a dang Rom Spaceknight.
Micronaughts...should be challenging The Transformers....
Antman (Who was checking for that?) was awesome.

Treat the material and its creators seriously and things will always go well.

••

FF, like most Marvel titles, does not need a "reboot" so much as a "reset".

It's because there's a space between comic-book and the hyphen in the address that shouldn't be there.

Thanks, Peter.

I love everyone here (I'm that sort of person), but I pray for the day when everyone will make links live. ;-)
