This is why I enjoyed the Acts of Vengence event.  Mixing up the foes made for some fun stories.  Another example would be making the Kingpin such an important figure in Daredevil.  Some matchups I'd like to see:

Hulk vs Ulik the Troll (Ulik gives Thor a run for his money and his savagery would be a good match against an enraged Hulk)

FF vs the Sinister Six (could be a good matchup the way the Mr Fantastic vs Doc Ock match was).

New Avengers vs the U-Foes (It wouldn't be much of a fight against the classic Avengers but with the more street level New Avengers, it could be a good fight).

The Penguin could pose as great of a threat to the Man of Steel as the Prankster or Toyman ever did.

That would be interesting to see.

And for some reason I want a New Mutants versus Apocalypse fight.

I can't think of a current incarnation of any major characters I'd care about fighting anybody. A time machine would help.

You give me 1970s Machine Man, and I'd like to see him fight Kraven the Hunter. Or Klaw. Or the U-Foes. In his own book.

1970s Fantastic Four vs the Abomination. FF vs Hydra and the Dreadnaughts.

1960s Doom Patrol vs Kobra. DP vs Solomon Grundy. DP vs the Monster Society.

1970s Cap America vs the Molecule Man. Cap vs Mysterio.

1970s Daredevil vs Modok. DD vs Dracula. DD vs Union Jack.

And so on.

That's not saying much, in my opinion, as I never found anything "great" or "threatening" about either of those characters.  What kind of threat are you thinking of, by the way?
