One of the things I like about JB's work is the little Easter Eggs he works into his art. I've noticed Dan Dare's spaceship Anastasia turns up (alongside the Fireball XL5) in this panel from She-Hulk 7. I'm almost sure I've seen her turn up elsewhere in JB's work, too. Has anyone spotted her anywhere else?

"Annie" has snuck in a lot of times! I know she's been a model on someone's table or desk probably at least twice. For those unfamiliar, here are a quartet of photos of a model of Anastasia build by Martin Bower, the British model maker who constructed the Fireball XL5 miniature I bought a few years back. Apparently he made this model for Keith Watson, one of the last artists to work on DAN DARE during my days as a reader, and it represents Watson's take on the ship, an ever so slightly "chubbier" version than other artists drew.

I don't think I had ever heard of Dan Dare before lurking around here on, and eventually joining, the JBF. What I've gleaned about the strip intrigues me. Any recommendations on how to get better acquainted with the series?

Eric, that's addressed in the "panel structure" thread on this very page!

And let us not forget (and please forgive the small thread drift) that other elements of Dan Dare have turned up in JBs comics....

Using those space suits had a double purpose. A nod to DAN DARE, of course -- but also a sly reference to the old Gold Key STAR TREK comics. In one of those, the artist had swiped Frank Hampson's design!

Not forgetting the giant Treen in Fantastic Four issue: 'Nightmare'•• The alien who makes an abortive attempt to kill Galactus in "The Trial of Reed Richards" issue is also heavily influenced by the Treens. (Again, for those not familiar, in DAN DARE, which was very 1950s style sci-fi, all the planets of the Solar System have life, much of it humanoid. Venus, which is, of course, a jungle planet, has two dominant races, the very human looking Therons, and the green skinned and more alien Treens. The Mekon, mentioned a few posts back, is/was the evil erstwhile ruler of the Treens.)
