I was just looking at a thread elsewhere, commenting on this image, and found this:

“But Vader wasn't really ‘evil’. Wasn't the actions he made because he wanted to bring order to the world, not because he wanted to see people suffer and enjoyed.”

Wow. Lucas must have been shipping the kool-aid in tanker trucks!!

It was the whole point of the prequels, wasn't it?

And it failed: Vader's hunt of Jedis as told by Obi-Wan in the first movie happened to be children being slaughtered!

Vader was supposed to be the Space Opera version of an evil wizard...
He's a mass murderer, a vicious and sadistic killer.

But I guess he just had to throw the Emperor in a hole to be redeemed.

Vader murdered children. The aforementioned kid Jedis. Plus between him and the Emperor, they make make Hitler's extermination of the Jews look like a drop in the bucket. But, yes, all he had to do to be redeemed was toss the Emperor.

Also didn't like that they edited ROTJ and switched out Sebastian Shaw  for Hayden Christiansen as Anakin's Force ghost. Why, exactly, does Anakin's ghost get to be young, but Ben and Yoda's stay old? Is it a statement that Anakin `died' when he became Vader?

Long after the fact I finally got to share my Vader head with Mark Hamill, via email, and he has declared it AWESOME!

My job here is done!

Shaun - only just seen your post. It’s a panel from a comic called Tag & Bink are Dead. It’s a really funny comic with really good art. They have become something of a cult status in the old EU.

JB - that is so good to know. Really pleased for you.

Back in the 80's i had to take a sick day and stay home.  I had recently acquired all three of he original trilogy on VHS and made a day out of watching them in a row. It was the first time I had done that.

I had walked away with a few theories based on that viewing.

#1.  Vader and Chebacca were friends before the "Dark Times":  Luke had mentioned that his father was a navigator aboard a spice freighter in Star Wars.  I always wondered about that.  I understood the Falcon was used to haul spice.  Then while watching the Empire Strikes Back, we see that moment where Boba Fett is about to shoot Chewbacca in the Carbon freezing chamber and Vader stops him.  Why would he stop that?  Now, today of course people will say he stopped him from shooting 3PO.  I had the theory back then that Vader was on the Falcon with Chewy back in the days and that is why he didn't want him killed in ESB.

#2 The Clone Wars:  Just the name sets the mind to all this imagery, at least for me.  That is until AOTC came out.  To me, I thought the Clone Wars would have been a Jedi-Centric war.  It made sense to me that if the force runs strong in bloodlines that those bloodlines would be cloned to create more.  Imagine Jedi being cloned throughout the years over and over again.  That brings a whole different meaning to Luke's battle with fake Vader in the cave.  It also assigns meaning to Obiwan's name.  Not Obiwan but O-B-1.  Meaning Ben himself was a clone, one of many.

Alas, when the Prequel Trilogy came out, it crapped all over my thoughts.

*********

Ben tells Luke that was a lie his uncle had told him.

The liar tells Luke someone is lying?

“That’s what your uncle told you. He didn’t want you following old Obi-Wan on some damn fool idealistic crusade, like your father did.”
