America. Land of the Free except where you are allowed to purchase things. Then the government will force you to buy American or slap tariffs that raise the prices. For a brilliant businessman, Trump sure does not know a lot about business.

I genuinely, in this age of globalisation, no longer understand the inability of me to be able to buy things from foreign internet sites. Digital media being the biggest puzzle to me.
There are a couple of Star Wars books due out next week that in the UK can only be bought from Kobo, not on Kindle. The Kobo prices are higher than the physical copy prices. The USA Kindle prices are considerably cheaper. This annoys the hell out of me to no end.
Toys are another bug bear. There are toys released that are exclusives to certain shops or sites. And they will not ship internationally. Just rediculous.

Short of having One World Government, what are you suggesting? Should US viewers have free access to BBC iPlayer content that UK viewers pay for with their TV license fees? Do people in the UK really want to be subject to US rules about content?

The problem is that the old system is completely obsolete. I can turn on a VPN and access any globally blocked site. I can download a show that they won't allow me to purchase. Netflix and Amazon have the right idea with their programs being available worldwide. What drives me crazy is when people won't ship overseas. I can buy any paper book online from any Amazon site in any country but I can't buy digital books the same way. 20th-century solutions don't work in the 21st century.
As for solutions, the BBC could put ads on their International site or get rid of the arcane TV License fee (which makes no sense when people watch TV completely differently than they did 50 years ago). And why should any country care about the US rules for content if they are running it in their own country?

And yet both still have region-restricted content.

Certainly.

The complaints seem to be that US providers of content don't make it easy for international buyers to acquire.

I'm not so concerned about sites such as Netflix, I'm more complaining about things like iTunes and Amazon Kindle where I can not buy a song from the USA site, when that tune is not on the UK site. Crazy - I should be able to pay the money and download the thing.
As Neil points out, I can do it with a physical book, why can't I do it with the eBook on Amazon?
The complaint is that international providers of content do not provide a consistent international level outlet, not that US providers do not let international buyers buy things. Yes I can buy a physical book from America, but no, I can't buy an eBook from America. Makes no sense at all

Your sentence is two words too long.
