(Forgive me if this has already been addressed elsewhere, but I didn't locate it with a search.)

JB,
Have you ever written a comic book story and gotten to the point where you thought "how the hell am I going to get our heroes out of this predicament"?

I've read stories by other writers where a deus ex machina comes into play, and I often wonder if that was the only way they could get the protagonist to come out on top.

Thanks,
Michael

••

99% of my tales begin in my head with the ending, and I then build backwards.

So, no. :-)

Did you have that method when co-plotting with Chris Claremont, JB?

Chris and I used to talk out our plots, bouncing all over the place.

What type of process did you use with Roger Stern?

Tahnk you, JB.

S'funny, I've written a few murder mysteries (e-books) -- and I work the
same way: you have a know how it's solved as a starting point --
interesting that your process parallels that.

Was it Mickey Spillane who made that method famous?  I assume he didn't come up with it but it seems like there was an interview or something where he gets credited for it.

I have a memory of you in an interview (I can't remember which, possibly Amazing Heroes) talking about the two parter where the FF meet Reed's father (this is so sketchy in my memory). in fact it is so long since the I last read the issues, I may even have the details of the story wrong.

It's the one where they end up in the wild west or in a wild west setting and there are robotic, flying horses. I think you talked about how that was one of the few where you didn't have the ending worked out at the start and you were not happy with the ending you came up with.

Dang my 30 year old memory.

P.D. James (I think) used to write her entire murder mystery novels with one specific character as the murderer and, when she finished, she picked a different character as the culprit and then went back and re-wrote as necessary.

The showrunners of BREAKING BAD did that often, in particular showing a flash-forward over a season later of Walter White buying a machine gun, without figuring out why he'd need one.
