At a party recently, I was asked to name my favourite heavy metal album. Just one. I could easily have rattled off 20, 30 or more, but by being forced to choose one, it made me THINK harder. And that's satisfying.

Not to start a thread drift, but being a huge heavy metal fan, I have to know what your answer was! I don't know if I could narrow it down to just one...but as I type this, I'm really trying to.

Why the disrespect for the original Champions lineup? I think that they match up pretty well against the original FF or X-Men (maybe without Professor X, granted.)

I think some underestimate the puissance of Hercules and the potency of the Ghost Rider. Also, the Black Widow was no slouch in the brains department... granted, not in the Richards/Stark/Pym/Banner/Doom circle, but really, how many were? (Well, I can think of five... :)

I'm not sure I like the direction the team got taken, and Ghost Rider is a mighty hard character to write... no less so because he was the only one with his own book, and thus the only one relatively immune to character modifications (much like Green Arrow, Black Canary, and Red Tornado vs Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman in the JLA.)

But they didn't seem to be a lackluster group when I started reading 'em, and I don't think that's the case as I reflect on that team now.

Oh, and Robbie... WOW.

Yes, Eric, wow. ;-)

I had to look up the word "puissance", by the way.

There will come a time when I re-read the entire 17-issue run of THE CHAMPIONS.

...

No disrespect from me!
They can hit you high and low with mutant and supernatural powers, demi-god strength and cunning.

It's too bad the title couldn't get on a roll with a creative team editorial would let stay together.

Are you just referring to the original 5 members or including Darkstar and Black Goliath?

***

Please forgive the pedantry, but whilst BG appeared in the Champions I don't recall him ever being a member.

I will go with JUGGERNAUT

- He matches up well against Hercules in the mano-a-mano fight.

- He provides a nice contrast with Ghost Rider, as their powers are both the result of supernatural forces. I would also like to see if GR's hellfire would have any effect on Juggernaut.

- He has a previous connection with Iceman and Angel, who can attest to how difficult it is to defeat the Big J in battle (and have them wondering aloud if they can do it without the rest of the X-Men).

- Meanwhile, Black Widow gets to use her brains and agility to find a way to remove Juggernaut's helmet, which leaves him slightly more vulnerable.

I would certainly buy that comic book. Especially if Mr. Byrne was at the helm :-)

Good writing there, James. :)

I'm guessing that GR's hellfire would have little-to-no effect on Juggernaut.

Robbie, I guess it depends as to whether hellfire actually "burns the soul" and if Juggernaut still has one  :-)

Since both Ghost Rider and Juggernaut gained their powers through supernatural forces, I thought that GR's hellfire might be able to injure Juggernaut. I know that conventional forces typically won't, so I thought that hellfire might just find a crack in his armor, so to speak.

I am not a fan of heavy metal music; however, some junior high school
classmates routinely asked me to draw Eddie for them.

You could be right, James. It's why I love discussions like this.

A private Facebook group I am on is forever debating, thanks to me, the merits of Asgardian magic over the Crimson Gem of Cytorrak. It's so hard to predict some things!

And maybe one day someone will tell me EXACTLY what will happen after Juggernaut and Destroyer collide...

I think people underestimate Hercules' strength. (I say he's stronger than
Thor.)
