Whatever the distributors say, it is canon (although it doesn't feel like it). It references the previous era and its main character is a brother of the guy who was in the first three seasons.
It's bizarre, though. For three seasons, the espionage agency was called "The Firm" and everyone wore white suits; at the beginning of season 4, when continuity should have been paramount, it became "The Company" and everyone wore non-white suits.
Airwolf was supposed to be this elite helicopter that only a few could fly (its creator, the heroes in the original series, etc.). In the fourth season, the pilots were flying it, but so was the spy chief, Jason Locke.
It's canon, but it doesn't feel like it.
