I understand WHY there's a "Rooney Rule", but the Raiders were definitely going to be hiring Gruden no matter what. Forcing a team to satisfy that rule by interviewing a minority isn't fair to the interviewee because he knows he won't get the job. It's like they're the "token black".
Without the Rooney Rule, it's pretty easy for teams to slip back into saying that there's no need to ever interview non-white candidates for head coaching positions. If the NFL's going to have the rule, it needs to be enforced.
I can only see one legitimate reason for waiving the Rooney Rule: Promoting from within the organization. And it has to be a legitimate promoting: Not hiring someone because you know you're going to fire the head ooach a couple of months (or weeks) down the road and will give the new hire their job.
