Good one, Trevor. I hadn't thought of that one, despite being a fan.

It's for sure not a superhero universe but
Riverdale has been known by many of comic
readers and civilians alike.

Let me set up the scenario exactly right, to get the right answer - because MY answer isn't gonna bet the standard one.

"Hey, Joe Average, nice seeing you here on this perfectly average sidewalk in this perfectly average town. Let me ask you a question. Stat naming super heroes that you've seen for me, okay? Cartoons, movies, comic books - wherever. Just start listing them, all right?"

We'll hit a lot of the Justice League and Avengers first. Who'll we get to? My bet is someone on TV, or in a movie. We might get...
Big Hero 6.
He-Man.
Thundercats.
Transformers.
Voltron
The Incredibles
Harry Potter.
Luke Skywalker.

I think we'd hear about those last three earliest in most people's thoughts of supers who aren't Marvel or DC. Which one? I couldn't guess at that point, but I think those would be the universes we'd hear about.

That's basically exactly how I played the scenario out
it my head too, Eric.

One punch Man?

_____________________________

Joe Boster I was also going to say One Punch Man, but the other heroes in the OPM universe don't get as much focus as Saitama does (at least in the anime series). Also, the OPM universe isn't as fleshed out as the My Hero Academia is.

These are interesting answers, but I confess that I opened this thread believing
there would be a lot of suggestions for different lines of actual comic book
superheroes - like Atlas vs. Charlton vs. MLJ -- you know, superhero
universes. Costumed characters, from different comic book titles, with
supporting casts, sharing a connected imaginary space. Is that a weird
presumption on my part?

These other answers certainly fit the "famous" part of the question, but it's
hard for me to see the Transformers or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (just for
example) as "superheroes".

Whether the general public sees the Turtles as superheroes or not, they are mutants who dress up in costumes and save the city by fighting super-villains.

What else would they be?

The Transformers, on the other hand, are soldiers in the middle of war trying to protect civilians caught in the crossfire.

This is a really interesting question.  Does the Lone Ranger count as a superhero? If so, (even though it's only a few characters deep) the answer could be the universe of the Lone Ranger and Green Hornet.

How about the Bionic franchises? The Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman...shared universe (over two networks!) and super powers...

Or maybe the Dexter's Lab/Monkey/Justice Friends universe?

Considering that most of Joe Public I meet who do not follow comics do not even know there is a difference between D.C. & Marvel, I think the only answer would possibly be THE INCREDIBLES.

HELLBOY, DREDD, TMNT etc, would not be viewed as super heroes.

Yeah, but does one property make a universe?

You can't get more vanilla civilian press than 1988 People Magazine, and even they understood that the Turtles were superheroes.

If they aren't perceived as such by the general public, I'd suggest it's because they equate superheroes with capes and "spandex".
