Mr. Byrne, I see that you used Captain America, Spider-Man, the Thing, and Wolverine for your collection of 20th century heroes. Would you use a different quartet depending on where your baseline was? I mean, notwithstanding the obvious - you wouldn't use Wolverine or Iron Fist for a 60s grouping. But, if you were trying set a 60s, 70s, 80s, etc. group, would you change the heroes? Or are there a basic group that are representative of heroes from any era? Thanks!

I've read 2112 soooo many times, that seeing Thomas Kirkland salute Nick Fury is just... weird!!!

Fun seeing these pages!

There's an alternate reality out there where 2112 was published as Tomorrow, and Sathanas became a really great Marvel / X-Men villain. Assuming the ending of the Tomorrow oneshot was somewhat analogous to what we got with 2112.

No, TOMORROW (for ease of discussion) would have used strictly Marvel lore.

Do you think there was ever a possibility of both Tomorrow and 2112? Or would it have been an either/or proposition?

It could only have been one or the other.

(Coincidentally, it was at this time Bob Harras asked me if I’d like to do a SHIELD book. Took no time at all to decline, when I learned they wanted to make SHIELD the bad guys!)

It's really cool to see the page, but I am glad Marvel didn't work out. 2112 and NEXT MEN are among my all time favorite books, and I am glad JB had the freedom to do it exactly as we see it today

If it was done at Marvel, then Sathanas would be a good guy by now! He would have been retconned into a misunderstood philanthropist.

I guess every long creative career is going to generate a lot of "sliding door" / what-if moments, but it really feels like JB's career has had a lot of them. Off the top of my head (and not numbered as any sort of preference):

1) JB stays on X-Men
2) JB is allowed to continue on the FF while doing Superman at the same time
3) Tomorrow vs 2112 / Next Men
4) That Avengers West Coast / Immortus storyline
5) Danger Unlimited
6) Freaks
7) the gap years between the two She-Hulk runs
8) both of the Hulk runs

And for every one of those, there's probably two more projects that we never even heard about!

----

Off the top of MY head...

9) A SHAZAM! series
10) Finishing The Last Galactus Story
11) The Spider-Man/Man-Thing/Ghost Rider one shot
12) The Danger Unlimited/Prototykes one shot
13) The Boogie Man series that JB pitched at Marvel
14) An adaptation of City at World's End
15) A Penny Dreadful comic
16) The Invanders/JSA one shot
17) A Batman/Two-Face issue -- part of the 'No Man's Land' storyline
18) A Metal Men series
19) A Dr. Strange series
20) What If Magneto had formed the X-Men?

Fun to think about what these projects could have been -- but it's MORE important to remember all the great projects we DID get.

Totally agree!

I think I've heard of and/or seen sketches & pages from most of the 20 listed... except this Boogie Man series, intriguing!!

Roger Stern had an idea for a character called Boogie Man. I offered to draw it. We pitched it to Shooter, and without even asking the concept he said “You have to spell it correctly.”

Right. Bogey Man. Because Magneto didn’t cause enough pronunciation problems.

Dead in the water.
