Yup, secret identities, why bother?A few years back, while still reading DC comics, I was put off by Superman and Batman calling each other "Clark" and "Bruce" - while in costume!

It's one thing if the characters were created without the intent of them having secret identities. The FF is the most obvious example.
Lots of other Marvel characters later had their real identities revealed. In some cases it made sense. When the world found out that the Hulk was Bruce Banner, it just added to Banner's problems and made him a constant man-on-the-run.
But Superman without a secret identity is just too far removed from what Siegel and Shuster intended -- and Superman has long already been rather far from what he initially was. Even JB's MAN OF STEEL didn't revert everything to the status quo circa 1938.

Bendis said something to the effect that if Clark gives up being "a mild-mannered reporter for the Daily Planet" then it opens up the possibility for "a thousand new and different Superman stories."

That is Bendis's go to answer for all of his so called "creative" and "brilliant" ideas, which comes off as kind of arrogant to me. It's as if he thinks that his ideas will leave an indelible mark on the characters that he is writing for years to come and will inspire those who follow him to create lots of "great" stories based off of his lame and unoriginal ideas.
