BTW, Havok is now called "the exploding man" ;-) Actually, I've always felt he had enormous potential, but most writers just don't know what to do with him or Polaris...

JB, what are the warning signs to you that a subplot isn't working? Are there red flags that you run into as writer or artist?••• I normally let the stories “write themselves,” so when they stop doing that, when I find myself consciously guiding the action or even wondering where it’s going, I take that as a strong sign a subplot has stalled on me. (“Letting the stories write themselves” is writer code for being so deep in the groove it all seems effortless.)

This is why it's hard to write serialized fiction, be it comic books, soap operas, TV series, or what have you. There are just going to be moments where weeks, months or more of hard work are not paying off. It's a mark of experience and skill when writers are able to handle that without showing a wrenching change on the page.FWIW, I can't recall reading a single issue of a book by JB where I wondered what the heck happened to so-and-so or why such-and-such plot thread hadn't paid off. It's all felt seamless to me.
