I was going to make fun of Outland but I decided I should see it again before I
do.

I enjoyed "the name of the rose"

I watch OUTLAND every few years, and I do not consider doing so a "guilty pleasure". There are elements of the movie that bug me--sound in a vacuum and the filmmaker's apparent assumption that a vacuum means zero gravity, for instance--but for the most part it works just fine as HIGH NOON in space.

Connery is top notch, of course, and he has a fine supporting cast.

I was too young when TIME BANDITS came out to recognize who the amazingly charismatic Roman/Fireman was. When my friends pointed out that was James Bond, I had a kind of instant recalculation of how to appreciate movie stars.

It is amazing to see someone like Sean Connery on screen.

RIP

My top 5 Connery films would probably be:

  • GOLDFINGER
  • FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
  • INDIANA JONES & THE LAST CRUSADE
  • THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER
  • THE RUSSIA HOUSE

Okay, I hate lists, but...

GOLDFINGER

THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING

ROBIN AND MARIAN

THE HUNT FOR RED OKTOBER

MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS

The last is more of an ensemble piece, but he shines.

Yesterday, I went over to my local Half Price Books store which sells used movies on DVD/Blu-Ray along with the usual printed material you would expect from its name. As I was looking through the movie collection in the store, I noticed that just about every copy of the films that starred Sean Connery had sold out. There were just a couple of copies of “Dr. No” left on the shelves, but the rest had been grabbed up.

I can only hope that those films were purchased by young movie fans who didn’t get the chance to see Connery when he was at his peak but wanted to find out what they had missed out on. That would be a fine legacy for an actor who earned the title of “movie star” and held it for over fifty years.

Rest in peace, sir.

OUTLAND was one of my go to movies back in the day when as
a teenager, I would espouse the benefits of widescreen
versions of films.

Specifically, the squash scene where, in pan and scan, you
had two pairs of feet holding a conversation.
