Depends on what definition of mutant you subscribe to.

••

How about the one established by Stan and Jack?

As time went by, the definition of "mutant" in the Marvel Universe became... vague. A lot of it was due to Chris' writing, which was odd, since he was such a devotee of Roy Thomas, and Roy had given us "non-mutant variant" to describe the likes of Spider-Man, the FF, the Hulk, etc.

(Get to the point where being good at math is a mutation, and we know we're in trouble.)

Or... where talking a lot of languages is a mutation? That's a slick combat power, right? RIGHT?

Hello, Doug Ramsey...

'Mutates' are sort of forced into mutation right? Like the ones in the Savage Land that Magneto 'created' (#62-63, and also seen in the Hidden years and Marvel Fanfare #1 & 2). When they later had Magneto (Rex) running that whole island nation of Genosha it was mutates vs. mutants vs. humans?

The 'creations' of the High Evolutionary sound like they would also be 'mutates' having been forced.

Cypher is a bad example since his mutant power is to automatically understand/cypher any written or spoken language (including body language and computer code). IIRC, his powers were described as a type of telepathy. Forge, would be a better example of what you are talking about.

Maybe I missed a step, but wouldn't being Magento's daughter ESPECIALLY make her a mutant?

I could be completely wrong on this, but the only possible thing that would make Polaris a mutant if she is Magneto's daughter is her green hair. Other then that, she's not a mutant.

Rick W. - That's good enough for me. A second generation mutant? I guess that's not really a mutant, so point to you. On the other hand... green hair is kinda sexy, too. "The power to turn men's heads" - X-Men #1.

Hello, Doug Ramsey...

At some point in Uncanny X-Men mutants seemed to be far more than before.

Doug Ramsey? A mutant?

A whole community in the sewers? The Morlocks, all mutants...

Illyana Rasputin? A mutant!

When I read my first issues , there seemed to be few of them.

Of course that was before Genosha's millions of mutants, mutant areas, Krakoa Island...

I wonder what happened to Stevie Hunter. Is she a mutant too?

I bet she woulda been if Claremont kept his hands on her. Or T'Challa's long lost beloved cousin. Or Sam Wilson's aunt. Something to drag her into extra-special status. Can't have a dance teacher be just a dance teacher.

Chris definitely had/has a low tolerance for “normals”. And he did/does love those “extended families”.

I googled Stevie, and she doesn't seem to be dead. Amazing!
