Matt - Well, you're a mod, so you can knock anyone you like. :) I have not heard of the PBS NewsHour, but I'm a simple man and I don't get out much. Is it good? Honest news, minimal bias, fairly far reaching in topics? I mean, Headline News wasn't exactly the be-all and end-all, but it was too short to get much into opinions.

Matt, if someone doesn't watch PBS at all, they might not have heard of it.

I did watch "Les Miserables" during Pledge Week... but I was in it, so I needed a comparison. ;)

I'm pretty sure I read something about Sky news being only 40% owned by Murdock at some point. Might only have applied to the European Sky.
I like PBS/NPR news because it is not as so-called 'entertaining' as other news shows. Let's make politics really dry and boring again so the wingnuts loose interest and maybe quit bothering themselves to "be heard" or to even vote. See a politician with charisma or a grand vision... run! Just get the boring but most qualified person and forget about if they are particularly likable even.

PBS NEWSHOUR is my go-to TV evening news. You can get the news summary in the first ten minutes, and then they do deep dive segments that really get on a granular level with ongoing topics. This show keeps me from the endless cycle of the all news TV stations, and it is has a deeper, more objective perspective than any of the major networks.
This started as THE MACNEIL-LEHRER REPORT, so it has a long history and deep roots. This team also covers conventions, elections and sponsors debates. Judy Woodruff is the main anchor, and she is wonderfully persistent in Q&A's. The two reporters covering the political scene are Yamiche Alcindor and Lisa Desjardins - they have been wonderful in the last year. The regular Friday segment pitting Mark Shields against David Brooks has always been a favorite - Shields just recently stepped down, but the segment will continue with Jonathan Capehart.
I really like their "Canvas" arts segment, mostly hosted by Jeff Brown. It covers areas I don't follow, so it's a great tool for opening new doors.
Also on PBS, I highly recommend FRONTLINE - they do some really amazing analysis and reporting. Before each election, they present a feature length doc called "The Choice" - a look at the lives of the two main candidates, alternating between the two paths that brought each of them to that point in history.

Thanks for the suggestions.
That one reporter Yamiche Alcindor - didn't he used to be Israel Abdul Jabbar? :) :) :)

See, this PBS sounds exactly like our ABC. Do people in the States generally don’t watch it?

I don't know where you're going with that statement. Yamiche Alcindor is certainly no stranger to harsh criticism. As one of the few Black women in the White House press pool, she has received significant blowback. Even from from Trump directly. Trump has a problem with Black people, and he has a problem with women - and a Black woman asking him accurate, well-informed questions is unacceptable to a racist and misogynist like him. You may remember her as the reporter who was berated by Trump at the outset of the pandemic last March, and he told her "you people" should "be nice" - which was Trump summoning all of the charm that made him the darling of The Proud Boys.

I think it was just a poorly conceived Dad joke steeped in white privilege. I think?

NBA superstar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar famously changed his name from Lew Alcindor.

I got that part as well but can’t figure out the Israel part. Not sure what the “white privilege” part means either. Lots of riddles on the forum today.
