Wanda’s early costume was so much more elaborate than it would become! A typical example, I expect, of Kirby’s habit of fully detailing the costumes in the first few drawings, then depending on the inkers to keep filling in the details while he chased deadlines. (Important to remember that in those early years Jack was turning in what would be considered breakdowns today. Common practice in comics and the strips to depend on the inkers to flesh things out.)

Oh, sure. Working on JK4W I did a flashback story to Scott Free’s early days with the original Mister Miracle. In the first issue of MM’s own title the costume had been colored differently, and I wanted to play off that to underscore the flashback. My request was ignored. In NAMOR I asked for the new Master Man to have a deep tan. Somewhere between my request and the printer he turned purple. Etc.

I suppose to get your "true vision" you'd have to pencil, ink and color yourself.
I assume back in the day that would be next to impossible

With my subtle and insidious color blindness, adding the hues myself is not the best idea!(Roger Stern delights in telling people I spent my first year on IRON FIST thinking his costume was brown.)

Not to stand on my soapbox for too long, but I think Cyclops' visor epitomizing the differences between "back in the day" comic book writing and now. Back in the day, the goal seems to have been STORIES and the art of telling a cohesive tale, not just producing a big flashy, last for a minute, sales boost. Back in the day, there was an in-story explanation for Cyclops' visor's look, not just an artistic style choice with no explanation. And when it changed, there was a story reason for it to allow the artist (Dave in this particular case) to create their own spin on it. Just your single line by Storm when you slimmed down the visor puts your narrative ahead of others who just opted for a flashier, "more popular" look. Kids (current creators) these days with no sense of continuity or respect for what's come before (said in gruff, old man voice, shaking a fist)
