I had not realized Prince Philip's death had come so close to her birthday.

Or his 100th! Both my grandfathers died weeks before their 100th, during massive plans for their centennials (not at the same time)  ...

If I ever get to be that age, I don't know how I could ever be comfortable not knowing which day will be my last.

My dad got to be almost 91, and the only indication he ever showed of awareness of his own mortality was occasionally wondering if mom had “gotten the house ready” for him.

And him a Buddhist!

exactly the same way you get through it now.
I just had a friend pass away this morning, he had been retired for only 3
months. You never know.

I get what Vinny is saying, and I agree. Yes, on an intellectual level I know that every single day could be my last. I’m at work as I type this, I know there is a chance that I may not make it home tonight, I could die in a car accident on my way home, or any other random ways I could die. Heck, any minute now a disgruntled employee could come into my office and start shooting and blow me away. Or natural causes could hit me, I’m 48. People have died at this age. I am fighting high blood pressure. Who knows, right? But, still, I have to imagine the difference if and when I hit those “old ages”, like the 80’s, but certainly the 90’s, where know I know that statistically I’m pushing it, that’s gonna be a bit nerve-wracking. Like, ideally, I want to diep eacefully in my sleep, but at 90 every time I start to fall asleep am I going to be thinking “is this it? Am I gonna wake up?”

Exactly. I admire those that are at peace with that knowledge, though. And who knows, maybe if I get to be that age I'll just feel ready by then. But right now I always "want to know what happens next"!

I suspect both knew his time was limited, as he had had a few health issues in recent years. Reaching that age even now is a remarkable achievement and I'm happy for them to have so many years together. It wouldn't necessarily be a surprise if Queen Elizabeth considers stepping down at this point; she's served her country for generations.

HRH doesn’t strike me as the type to “step down”. Like her great great grandmother, Victoria, she sees herself as in harness to her last breath.

Yeah, I think if she was ever inclined to step down, she would have done it by now, like at her 50th or 60th "jubilees." Or just a year or two after she surpassed Victoria's reign. They're literally going to have to carry her off that throne.

I saw a documentary where it was implied that Queen Elizabeth II views her elevation to the throne was DIVINELY ordained - right of Kings and all,  I don't think she would ever willingly abdicate.
