Viewing today's closeup of Ororo's face makes me wonder:
Has it ever been explained if there's a reason her irises and pupils are oval? (Besides the fact that it's how Dave designed her?)
Or, for that matter, why they disappear when she's in full-on weather-control mode? (I know: "Comics.")

Totally missed the white hair there, did you? :)

This may be sacrilege, but strictly speaking, facial features-wise in that panel she resembles Beyonce.   < id="protanopia"> < id="deuteranopia"> < id="tritanopia">

There's always been an interesting interplay in how the 'students' refer to the professor.  Scott has always appeared to hold him in some sort of paternal regard, with he, Hank, and Warren deferring to the Sir title of a headmaster proper.  Bobby (the kid) maybe not so much.

Jean and Ororo get away with calling him Charles on the regular (which he doesn't seem to mid, coming from them),  and Wolverine is apt to toss out the occasional Chuck, Charley, or Prof.

Hard to imagine Logan, Sean, or Moira showing too much deference to someone in their potential peer grouping.

All in all, it seems to flow smoothly that the original 4 students would have a nickname like X for the guy.

@Ron Bailey

I also got the Beyonce, with a hint of Tyra Banks.
Something about the eyes, and the vibe.

Jean,

Back in the day, with Paul - and Barry Windsor Smith's interpretations, I used to imagine an Iman/Noami Campbell look.  < id="protanopia"> < id="deuteranopia"> < id="tritanopia">

Ron,

We must be from the same planet.  I had those same strong impressions.

And not to grouse too loudly, but I was more than a bit disappointed with the casting of Halley Berry.  Won't even get started on that quote unquote accent that was there one moment, gone the next.

That is to say, it would've been nice if they had opted for an Iman or Naomi for her on-screen adaptation.  But the comics are a different medium, so hey.  It is what it is.

Don't get me started ... I'm no purist about staying true to source material if they are creative about it and can justify a deviation based on technical limitations or narrative necessities, but a tall Wolverine looking down on a short, lightskinned, hairstyle-challenged Ororo just made my heart sink.  < id="protanopia"> < id="deuteranopia"> < id="tritanopia">

Casting agents, get a clue!

Spot on with Kelsey Grammar as Beast and Stewart as Picard, of course.

Ron: Stewart as Picard, of course.

**

He was fine as Picard! ;-)

As Professor X, though, can he really be said to match the role? Outside of being bald, I can't see anything else. I never saw X as British or otherwise as Shakespearean as Stewart. I think if he had become more famous in America when he was young, he would not have been considered for the role.

"Kelsey Grammar as Beast"

--

That one impressed me. Especially with his comedic background, he had every chance to mockily approach the role. But he played it completely straight.

Have you heard tony old Bostonians speak? I grew up with cousins from there that would visit, they make Katherine Hepburn sound like Rosie Perez, with all their high society airs.  < id="protanopia"> < id="deuteranopia"> < id="tritanopia">

Dignified, authoritarian yet compassionate? Scholarly? A resolute believer in a passionate vision? Nothing? Really? If anything it's a little too much on the nose.
Substitute mutant/human harmony for the Prime Directive, tell me what you see :)
