John Byrne and Jerry Ordway have been my top two for many years & the recent "Man of Steel" hardcovers just cement it for me.

Kurt Schaffenberger was 'the' Supergirl artist for me.

I don't remember George Perez Superman outside of his appearances in Justice League and with Wonder Woman... am I missing out on something?

Rebecca, you might want to check out Crisis On Infinite Earths.

Oh that...I could borrow an expression from Homer Simpson, but I did buy the first seven issues of that series as they came out. I also bought the Legion comic the same month with Supergirl's dead body on it's cover too, and then I didn't buy the eight issue of Crisis.

I was really hoping maybe there was a Perez Superman run somewhere I didn't know about! Looking back I have to admit Supergirl hadn't been worth following in quite a long awhile, I had tried, I didn't like the cheerleader outfit, and she did die quite heroically. Somehow I still don't feel the need to find out how Crisis worked out. I went on to get the four Dark Knight books, and even started Watchmen, but I was done with super-heroes for quite awhile (but now digging up later good stuff I missed out on).

George Perez did a short run on Action Comics in the late 80s.

Perez did ACTION COMICS for about a year (1989) and then he wrote and laid out the NEW 52 SUPERMAN's first few issues (2011).  Plus, he did random things like CRISIS (and some of INFINITE CRISIS), but I especially remember a great DC COMICS PRESENTS teaming Superman with OMAC.

George Perez did full pencils on Action Comics #'s 643 - 645, and then layouts for issue #'s 647 - 652 with the finished pencils being done by Kerry Gammill.

John is easily one of the best, but my favorite, my first
favorite, was my all-time favorite cartoonist - Gil Kane!
So different, but so dynamic and powerful. I loved his
capes and poses and the energy on the page.

Curt Swan.

Plaudits a'plenty too for the best (in my opinion) inker of Superman: Dick Giordano.

I omitted Ron Frenz earlier. A favourite of mine from Amazing Spider-Man and Thor, and he brought that same level of energy to Superman.

Perez can do no wrong, for sure.  But his Superman doesn't really stand out for me. Tended toward a lean, cut build.  Might be that George Reeves set it in my consciousness early, but I think Superman should be built like a football player, muscled certainly but the guy ought to look like he can stop a train.
